[17:49] <paolo> i'm trying to edit this page https://wiki.python.org/jython/TestingJython but it looks it's immutable
[17:50] <paolo> i was enabled to edit the wiki
[17:50] <paolo> do some pages require special edit permissions?
[17:50] <paolo> if you know

[18:35] <nickmbailey> are there any timelines for the next 2.7 release?

[22:05] <jimbaker> nickmbailey, well, we kept on missing our timelines. but a lot of work has been done. i would like to get http://bugs.jython.org/issue2029 fixed, because it would be nice for ipython support
[22:05] <jimbaker> but we attempt another beta 4 now that the gc observability support has landed
[22:06] <jimbaker> (this is to help eventually provide c python extension api support through the third-party jyni.org project)
[22:07] <nickmbailey> jimbaker: cool, i suppose just subscribing to the user list is a good way to keep an eye out for release announcements and such
[22:08] <jimbaker> given that most of the bugs we fixed in the extended beta 4 cycle were ones i was considering for rc1, we are in pretty good shape. there's just about 4-5 bugs remaining on my triage list
[22:08] <jimbaker> everything else will go into 2.7.1 or later
[22:09] <jimbaker> nickmbailey, yeah, it seems really close now. most of the remaining problems are with windows support
[22:15] <jimbaker> enebo, is this the approach you have taken with jruby 9000 - https://rubygems.org/gems/jruby-launcher ? really need to get rid of jython.bat at some point
[22:16] <enebo> jimbaker: we took that path like 6 years ago
[22:16] <jimbaker> enebo, yeah, don't rub it in too much :)
[22:16] <enebo> jimbaker: I don???t remember how long ago actually :)
[22:17] <enebo> jimbaker: but specifically #! options do noty work with shell scripts
[22:17] <enebo> jimbaker: that was the biggest reason for doing it
[22:18] <jimbaker> enebo, do you install this gem in your installer? or is it a step that users take themselves?
[22:20] <enebo> jimbaker: right now we do not install it except for windows
[22:20] <enebo> jimbaker: on gem install it will compile for their platform
[22:20] <jimbaker> the reason i ask is that we have a similar bootstrap step that is bundled in python these days for pip (-m ensurepip)
[22:21] <enebo> jimbaker: we would like to provide win/mac/linux by default
[22:21] <enebo> jimbaker: I would like to replace that jruby-launcher codebase with something else
[22:21] <jimbaker> enebo, ok, makes sense and in line with what we would do as well
[22:21] <enebo> jimbaker: It is super painful code
[22:21] <enebo> jimbaker: pinched from netbeans launcher
[22:22] <enebo> jimbaker: I would like to redo in Rust but no time and that also really requires common platforms have executables pre-made
[22:22] <enebo> since most will not have rustc
[22:23] <jimbaker> enebo, ahh. i personally would like to use cpython, which is available by default on everything but windows. of course that's the target we need this most for...
[22:23] <jimbaker> maybe we should just have a 2-for-1 offer - on windows you get 2 pythons for the price of 1! :)
[22:24] <enebo> jimbaker: yeah if you look at our existing code you will see we have crazy sauce dll overlay code for windows too

[23:18] * xemdetia (xemdetia@nat/ibm/x-rtfjrbaaximruuhj) Quit (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
[23:43] <peke> jimbaker: could the potential cpython based jython launcher use py2exe or something similar on windows?
