[16:10] <jimbaker> peke, i really appreciate that feedback! of course, i also have to thank rackspace, my employer, for asking me to do this work
[16:12] <jimbaker> fwierzbicki, so i think we are on the verge of beta 2. i should have the rest of unicodedata done today, which means i can merge in jython-encodings; then i will revisit pip. iirc, there's only one more minor dependency left, which is to support delete=True for one function in tempfile
[16:12] <jimbaker> plus of course jython-ssl
[16:12] <jimbaker> but that's almost complete for client-side

[18:52] <peke> jimbaker: thanks to rackspace too, then. =)
[18:53] <jimbaker> peke, definitely quite cool to be working for rackspace on jython related stuff!
[18:54] <peke> jimbaker: do you changes to unicodedata mean that importing it won't take several seconds anymore? that would be great. it's somewhat annoying these days that you should import it only when absolutely needed, never in the top of the module.
[18:54] <jimbaker> friday i'm still planning to do our monthly hackday on twisted, specifically looking at a NIO-based reactor. prereq - need to get trial script imports figured out
[18:55] <jimbaker> peke, yes, this is a nice change. the only drawback is that jython is going to add to get 10M bigger, because of the ICU4J jar
[18:55] <jimbaker> but i believe in correctness first
[18:55] <jimbaker> and the current unicodedata support is not quite right
[18:56] <peke> also speed before disk space or download speed.
[18:56] <jimbaker> in this day, yes
[18:56] <peke> apparently java7 didn't provide enough new unicode functionality so you needed to use icu4j?
[18:57] <peke> or is java6 support still mandatory?
[18:57] <jimbaker> peke, correct, there's some support in java 7, but it's not sufficient. re requiring updating to java 7, i don't think we have enough evidence to commit just yet
[18:59] <jimbaker> nio2 is compelling. i'm going to look at that again. but i'm not convinced we need os.NO_FOLLOW support
[19:04] <peke> yeah, it's pretty tricky question. oracle has eol'd the free java6 but still provides paid support. other vendors (ibm, openjdk, ...) apparently still support java6.
[19:05] <peke> people may still be using even unsupported java6, and jython on top of it, for various reasons.
[19:06] <peke> now that jython 2.7 betas already support java6, it would also be a bit strange to drop the support.
[19:09] <peke> on the other hand, most of the users are very likely to use java7 already now, and that percentage is only going to grow before jython 2.7 final is out.
[19:16] <jimbaker> right. so on the one hand, the only way to test 2.7 on java 6 is to manually run this on an os x laptop, and assume that's representative. since none of the jython devs is going to get a license from oracle :)
[19:17] <jimbaker> also, although i try to look at API since then comments, that's a tough proposition in general
[19:18] <jimbaker> on the other hand, the case is weak :)
[19:18] <jimbaker> in terms of keeping java 6 support

[20:35] * thereisnospoon (~thereisno@27-33-1-87.tpgi.com.au) has joined #jython
[21:14] <peke> jimbaker: personally i'd probably drop java6 support. any extra work needed by it is waste in long term, and not doing any work (e.g. testing) effectively means it's not supported anyway.
[21:19] <peke> most importantly, i hope you you don't avoid using goodies provided by java7. for example, some modules or functions requiring java7 ought to be ok even if java6 was supported in general.

[23:51] <jimbaker> ok, unicodedata looks good. i should be able to merge in my jython-encodings branch very soon, sometime after dinner i suppose
[23:51] * jimbaker really wants to get these annoying bits out of the way
