[20:05] <freeasywandering> I read from some where that Jython does not officially support OpenJDK. Is it true?
[20:06] <fwierzbicki> freeeasywandering: not sure what that could mean - I know I've run in on top of OpenJDK.
[20:06] <fwierzbicki> we attempt to run on any JVM
[20:07] <fwierzbicki> I haven't heard of any trouble on OpenJDK
[20:07] <freeasywandering> ok, got it. Thank you for the clarification.

[22:22] <jimbaker> freeasywandering: not certain what *officially* means here :). the good thing is, jython is part of the da capo benchmark, which is fairly standard in some parts of the JVM community. i know that we had at least one bug report come from an azul employee, and it may have been related to the release today of zing
[22:26] * ssbr (80646d41@gateway/web/freenode/ip.128.100.109.65) has joined #jython
[22:27] <ssbr> How do I make code that used __file__ in CPython work in Jython (where __file__ becomes something like '__pyclasspath__/foo/bar$py.class')?
[22:29] <pjenvey> ssbr - depends what you're doing with it, but basically you can't assume it's a .py file. it can be a .pyc or $py.class on jython
[22:30] <ssbr> pjenvey: using os.path.dirname() on it to get the directory the source file is in.
[22:31] <jimbaker> ssbr: also that's only going to be the case if it doesn't have the source file (.py)
[22:31] <ssbr> Apparently not.
[22:31] <jimbaker> so it's complicated
[22:31] <ssbr> I'm working with the source.
[22:31] <jimbaker> i don't think it's any different than cpython here actually
[22:32] <ssbr> It worked with CPython. I haven't removed the .py files.
[22:32] <ssbr> (if it helps, I'm running the .py file through django, which may do weird things that confuse jython)
[22:32] <jimbaker> in terms of the possible things it could be (other than not $py.class). but your cpython code probably handles the case
[22:33] <ssbr> i.e. jython manage.py my_command . Django looks up in all the command packages (pkg.management.commands for each django app "pkg") for any command with that name.
[22:34] <ssbr> I suppose jython can't find my .py file for some weird reason, because of this?
[22:34] <ssbr> this would also explain why pdb is failing to list code when I use the list command.
[22:34] <ssbr> So what could Django have done that's confusing Jython?
[22:35] <jimbaker> ssbr: django does play its tricks. but i've been out of the mainstream of django dev for a while, so not certain what sort of introspection it's doing
[22:36] <jimbaker> what i have found is that it's usually easy to fix
[22:36] <ssbr> This doesn't sound easy to fix at all. I have no clue why jython wouldn't be able to find a .py file, when it *is* able to find the compiled version which is right next to it.
[22:37] <ssbr> This is my first time using Jython.
[22:39] <jimbaker> easy to fix for someone with some experience, because it tends to be one line of code. maybe not so easy otherwise.
[22:43] <ssbr> ... aaaaand I can't create a new test django project because apparently jython looks up the old project's compiled class files instead of compiling the new project's class files.
[22:43] <ssbr> I think django's jython support is just a marketing thing.
[22:43] <ssbr> This isn't workable at all.
[22:45] <jimbaker> ssbr: it's not just a marketing thing, there are a number of production systems that use django on jython. juneau001 might have a better idea
[22:46] <ssbr> jimbaker: were the production systems produced by the people that wrote django's jython support?
[22:46] <jimbaker> ssbr: actually, no
[22:47] <ssbr> Well then something must be wrong with my setup. If I only knew what.
[22:47] <jimbaker> have you looked at jythonbook.com - some good guidance there on setup
