IRC Log for 2010-09-14

Timestamps are in GMT/BST.

[0:00] <Juneau001_> I can update the site in a few. Do we have MD5 and SHA1 ready to go? I will also need the link to the JAR.
[0:00] * juneau001 (~juneau@pool-72-69-210-121.chi01.dsl-w.verizon.net) has joined #jython
[0:02] <Juneau001_> Sorry for the confusing username...on two machines right now.
[0:16] <jimbaker> Juneau001_: it's part of working with irc :)
[0:28] <Juneau001_> jimbaker: I will be bouncing around a bit over the next few hours, but I won't be far from the Mac at all. : ) Just let me know when you need the site updated and give me the link...will have it updated shortly thereafter.
[0:28] <jimbaker> Juneau001_: thanks
[0:29] <jimbaker> Juneau001_: you have the links from sourceforge, right?
[0:31] <Juneau001_> jimbaker: I do. If this beta follows the same link location as the last then we are good to go. Do you want me to publish MD5 and SHA1 on the site download page? If so, then I will need those strings.
[0:33] <jimbaker> Oti: where are these published?
[0:33] <Juneau001_> jimbaker: I believe oti published those for the last release.
[0:34] <jimbaker> sure, we just need his input here - we can generate ourselves, but best from chain of custody to have them from him
[0:34] <jimbaker> (and clearly not rely on irc for the actual strings ;) )
[0:35] <Juneau001_> :)
[0:47] <Juneau001_> jimbaker: Oti Site is ready without the strings...want me to update now and revisit the MD5 SH1 later?
[0:48] <jimbaker> Juneau001_: let's wait on this
[0:49] <jimbaker> the download is over http, and we have gone to some lengths to protect the integrity of our code. i would prefer if we kept that process
[0:49] <Juneau001_> jimbaker: sounds good
[1:34] <jimbaker> Juneau001_: i have blogofile running
[1:35] <jimbaker> that took 2 hours for a basic setup, but now i have a blog that's built out using rst, with mako for templating. that seems like a reasonable thing to me
[1:36] <jimbaker> so i'm ready to post once we have the hashes available
[1:41] <Juneau001_> jimbaker: nice!
[1:50] * Juneau001_ (~rooms@pool-72-69-210-121.chi01.dsl-w.verizon.net) Quit (Quit: Rooms ??? iPhone IRC Client ??? http://www.roomsapp.mobi)
[2:05] <fwierzbicki> Congrats all on getting the beta out!
[2:20] <jimbaker> fwierzbicki: thanks, but we still want those hashes first before we can announce
[2:20] <jimbaker> is there some way of getting them w/o using an insecure process?
[2:48] * lopex (lopex@chello089076044027.chello.pl) Quit ()
[2:57] * verterok (~ggonzalez@unaffiliated/verterok) Quit (Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
[2:58] <jimbaker> fwierzbicki, Oti, juneau001 - i have done a soft release of my blog post at http://zyasoft.com/pythoneering/ with this permalink http://zyasoft.com/pythoneering/2010/09/jython-2.5.2-beta-2-is-released/
[2:59] <jimbaker> again, probably best until we get the hashes on the release, but since the download also has been soft released, this seemed to make the most sense
[2:59] <jimbaker> got to run, they're closing this starbucks!
[2:59] * jimbaker (~jbaker@64.134.155.195) Quit (Quit: jimbaker)
[3:01] <juneau001> jimbaker: nice post

[3:57] * stakkars (~tismer@i577B767A.versanet.de) has joined #jython
[4:46] <Oti> juneau001 - I sent you a mail regarding the hashes
[4:50] <jimbaker> Oti: thanks!
[5:21] * verterok (~ggonzalez@unaffiliated/verterok) Quit (Quit: leaving)
[5:55] <jimbaker> well, i think the idea of having hashes on something besides https is not quite secure
[5:56] <jimbaker> but we do it for cpython too
[5:56] <jimbaker> so anyway i don't want to put this off any longer. here we are one day later, but ready to push it out there: http://zyasoft.com/pythoneering/2010/09/jython-2.5.2-beta-2-is-released/
[5:57] <jimbaker> i'll let josh update the jython.org website, but i will tweet now!

[22:28] <jimbaker> pekka klarck (of robot framework) just reported that our default download is now the release notes for 2.5.2b2
[22:29] <jimbaker> on sourceforge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/jython/ - i downloaded this last night, so i wonder what changed
[22:30] <jimbaker> anyway, we obviously need to get this fixed, back to the installer. fwierzbicki, pjenvey you are the only admins on sourceforge. can you make my zyasoft account an admin? and/or change the default?
[22:30] <jimbaker> (only admins on #jython right now)
[22:36] <fwierzbicki> jimbaker: sure, I'll make the zyasoft account an admin
[22:36] <jimbaker> fwierzbicki: thanks
[22:36] * fwierzbicki hoping sourceforge hasn't changed the admin interface again :)
[22:36] <jimbaker> fwierzbicki: really hoping we can move off sourceforge soon!
[22:39] <fwierzbicki> yeah... me too. hg move seems stalled. I could get some help for bzr/launchpad pretty easily now if the devs are ok with that :)
[22:39] <fwierzbicki> my initial impression of launchpad and bzr has been quite positive fwiw
[22:42] <fwierzbicki> jimbaker: you are now an admin
[22:43] <jimbaker> fwierzbicki: thanks
[22:44] <pjenvey> I must admit I'm not a fan of launchpad, the UI has always been weird
[22:45] <fwierzbicki> pjenvey: I just want to get on a dvcs of some kind on the sooner side
[22:45] <fwierzbicki> maybe once CPython is on hg we can get someone to help with that
[22:46] <fwierzbicki> that == hg transition trouble
[22:46] <pjenvey> we could also threaten to move to github
[22:46] <fwierzbicki> ha
[22:46] <pjenvey> maybe then we'd get some help =]
[22:46] <fwierzbicki> I had a positive experience with github last year, if not a positive experience with git
[22:47] <fwierzbicki> I mean to say I don't really like git, but github is nice.
[22:47] <jimbaker> github is very nice i agree
[22:47] <jimbaker> and git, you get used to it
[22:48] <jimbaker> btw, i just changed the default download back to the installer
[22:49] <fwierzbicki> jimbaker: cool, thanks
[22:50] <jimbaker> however, i recently talked to barry warsaw, and he did mention the metadata aspects of bzr are really nice. i think one key aspect of a dvcs for us is that we have an interesting dependency on CPythonLib files with changed versions in Lib... it would be best if we can maintain that relationship w/o log metadata
[22:51] <jimbaker> it's not clear to me how hg - or bzr or git - could provide support in managing such upstream relationships
[22:51] <jimbaker> but one thing is clear to me, we should not blindly adopt hg just because it's been adopted by cpython. they have different needs
[22:53] <fwierzbicki> I agree on not blindly following cpython. I know that roundup has not been a popular choice with many for bug tracking.
[23:00] <fwierzbicki> though I say it has been much better than the sourceforge tracker
[23:04] <jimbaker> i would go for github were it not for its lack of rst
[23:05] <jimbaker> i do not like markdown
[23:05] <jimbaker> that's one advantage of launchpad, you can choose rst
[23:19] <jimbaker> another consideration is getting a better ci going. i really like jruby's http://ci.jruby.org/ or pypy's speed center http://speed.pypy.org/
[23:20] <jimbaker> if we had a ci.jython.org, w/ more projects being tested on it, that would be really nice. pjenvey, it looks like http://bob.underboss.org:8080/job/jython/ is down again
[23:21] <jimbaker> got to run
[23:21] * jimbaker (~jbaker@173-8-237-101-Colorado.hfc.comcastbusiness.net) Quit (Quit: jimbaker)
[23:55] <pjenvey> looks like that was sourceforge or the network's fault
