[15:00] <vitormazzi> what could make the PackageManager fail to find the classes in a jar file?
[15:01] <vitormazzi> if I add the class via sys.add_package, the class is imported successfully, otherwise it's import fails
[15:03] <vitormazzi> does anyone have a clue? I already looked at all the tickets that could be related to this, without any luck

[16:05] <jimbaker> vitormazzi: this is a bit too open ended for me, unfortunately
[16:11] <vitormazzi> jimbaker: yeah, I agree. I just don't know where to look at to get more information
[16:12] <vitormazzi> there is nothing fancy being done. Just a virtualenv based on a plain jython install (2.5.2b)
[16:12] <jimbaker> that works well
[16:12] <jimbaker> however, i have previous experience with virtualenv not always getting the links right
[16:12] <vitormazzi> yeah.. it is working fine on 5 other machines..
[16:14] <vitormazzi> already tried using the jython outside of the virtualenv, same thing
[16:14] <vitormazzi> i'll checkout jython source to see if i get any hints
[16:15] <ropoctl> how does the speed compare between jython and java extensions that manipulate python objects
[16:15] <jimbaker> sounds like a good idea - easy enough to instrument the source if you need to go down that route (never use a debugger on jython source unless you want to spend a lot of time ;) )
[16:16] <ropoctl> im deciding how much more of the processing to code into java
[16:16] <jimbaker> java extensions will definitely work faster. so standard profiling applies here
[16:17] <jimbaker> there's no overhead in java code calling the python objects. there is some overhead calling your java code, because it goes through reflection
[16:17] <jimbaker> but in general, pretty minor
[16:18] <jimbaker> we need to pull out the expose functionality that we use for jython internals, which allows us to avoid the reflection overhead... that could be released as a pypi package however, so 2.5.2 doesn't depend on it, and you don't have to wait for 2.6
[16:19] <ropoctl> yah i guess i will need to learn how to do the profiling
[16:19] <jimbaker> standard python profile works fine... slow, compared to cProfile, but it knows about python
[16:20] <vitormazzi> jimbaker: thanks for the help
[16:20] <jimbaker> (we could implement a "cProfile", but probably the better bet is to work with an existing java profiler and teach it more about python)
[16:20] <ropoctl> cProfile does not work in jython right
[16:20] <jimbaker> correct, no cProfile
[16:20] <ropoctl> http://www.jython.org/docs/library/profile.html mentions cProfile for some reason
[16:21] <jimbaker> ropoctl: that's because we haven't really combed through that particular docset
[16:21] <ropoctl> thats just copypasta from the standard docs
[16:21] <ropoctl> ah
[16:21] <jimbaker> we basically lifted it from cpython 2.6, yes
[16:22] <jimbaker> the thought is to use mercurial to manage the patches better.... regardless, it's part of 2.5.2 final to do these corrections in the docset
[16:23] <jimbaker> see http://bugs.jython.org/issue1650 - deque is just the tip of this problem
[16:26] * vitormazzi (~vitormazz@web.myfreecomm.com.br) has left #jython
[16:26] <jimbaker> just thinking out loud here - it could be very useful to have a doc sprint. maybe part of a larger sprint. just choose some day in the next month and divide out the docs to be checked
