[10:04] <vsajip> search.maven.org seems to be down, can someone tell me a direct download link for Jython 2.7beta1? Thanks.
[10:19] * pklarck (peke@kapsi.fi) has joined #jython
[10:21] <pklarck> noticed that jython-standalone-2.5.3.jar is 4M bigger than jython-standalone-2.5.2.jar (9.9M vs 14M as reported by ls -lh)
[10:22] <pklarck> opened both archives and noticed that 2.5.3 seems to have extra files and dirs in root.
[10:23] <pklarck> they seem to be class files generated from contents under Lib.
[10:24] <pklarck> is this on purpose or a bug? in the latter case, can i safely remove class files from the jar?
[10:25] <pklarck> i'm building a standalone version of robot framework (test automation tool) and wouldn't like the download we provide to contain non-needed cruft.

[15:54] <fwierzbicki> pklarck, ah - including the .class files was unintentional you can get rid of those. I'll have to look at the build process (it was tweaked a bit)
[15:54] <fwierzbicki> though some have requested we include them but we haven't in the past so it probably doesn't make sense to do it now
[15:55] <fwierzbicki> or maybe we need more versions of the distros, but I'm not up for that this cycle
[15:57] <fwierzbicki> I'll be sure to fix that before 2.5.4rc2 and 2.7b2

[18:13] <pklarck> fwierzbicki: including class files would be fine but shouldn't they then be under Lib and not in the root of the jar?
[18:13] <pklarck> also, couldn't you then remove *.py files altogether?
[18:14] <fwierzbicki> pklarck, I have heard of people removing the *.py files before, but that would be kind of anti-python style. If only one is there I'd say it should be the *.py
[18:14] <fwierzbicki> pklarck, odd that they are in the root of the jar though - I'll have to take a look
[18:14] <fwierzbicki> typically they'd be in Lib/
[18:16] <pklarck> fwierzbicki: i don't think source files are needed inside a jar. people typically aren't looking inside them anyway.
[18:16] <fwierzbicki> hmmm I'm looking at jython-standalone-2.5.4-rc1.jar and I don't see any $py.class files...
[18:17] <pklarck> do you know would including class files, w/ or w/o source, make the jar faster?
[18:17] <fwierzbicki> pklarck, I don't know really
[18:17] <pklarck> fwierzbicki: haven't looked at 2.5.4 but they certainly were there in 2.5.3
[18:18] <fwierzbicki> I see what you are saying about class files. I'd have to think about it... It's a part of Python style to always include .py sources - you rarely see CPython distributed as .pyc files even in a zip
[18:19] <fwierzbicki> though I imagine someone has done it
[18:20] <pklarck> doesn't python require different .pyc files depending on the interpreter version? if that's true, then .pyc only distro would be tied to a specific version.
[18:20] <fwierzbicki> Jython requires this too
[18:20] <pklarck> there isn't such a problem with standalone jython. you know for certain which jython version is used.
[18:20] <fwierzbicki> that's true
[18:21] <fwierzbicki> Probably we should enhance the installer so you can leave out .py or .class files if you want for different use cases
[18:21] <pklarck> if i was to release standalone python, i'd definitely include only *.pyc files if it would make the release faster than including only source and smaller than including both
[18:22] <fwierzbicki> That and think carefully about what goes in the standard jars... I can see your point. My gut is that we should probably have both in the standard jars and have ways to leave one or the other out from the installer for special needs
[18:22] <pklarck> fwierzbicki: there is no installer for the standalone jython
[18:23] <fwierzbicki> Sure there is - you check "standalone" while using the one installer
[18:23] <fwierzbicki> pklarck, ^^^
[18:23] <pklarck> oh, didn't know about that. i've just always downloaded it directly.
[18:24] <pklarck> like http://search.maven.org/remotecontent?filepath=org/python/jython-standalone/2.5.3/jython-standalone-2.5.3.jar
[18:24] <fwierzbicki> Heh, we used to not distribute the standalone one at all
[18:24] <fwierzbicki> you *had* to make it if you wanted it
