[0:08] <gColossus> agronholm: is spawning a new thread an expensive operation?
[0:08] <agronholm> I'm not sure
[0:08] <agronholm> but I would think so -- of course it's all relative
[0:08] <gColossus> I don't have any other operation to be compared against yet.
[0:09] <gColossus> well, I guess it's NOT inexpensive, that's why people invented threadpool ...
[0:09] <gColossus> but I don't have a detailed estimate of how expensive it is
[0:10] <gColossus> time to google it up!

[22:13] <gColossus> agronholm: what's the word that technical paper uses to say that data was unmodified? "authenticity"?
[22:14] <agronholm> yes
[22:14] <agronholm> well
[22:14] <gColossus> agronholm: is there any other word for it?
[22:14] <agronholm> authenticity means that its origins can be verified
[22:15] <agronholm> integrity means that it was unmodified
[22:15] <gColossus> agronholm: yep, that's the word! itegrity!
[22:15] <gColossus> thank you <3
[22:15] <gColossus> agronholm: (sorry, my 1st language is not English)
[22:16] <agronholm> well, neither is mine :)
[22:16] <agronholm> *is it
[22:16] <gColossus> agronholm: really? what's yours? mine is Vietnamese.
[22:16] <agronholm> Finnish
[22:16] <gColossus> I see, cool :D
[22:28] <gColossus> agronholm: I have a question, why does upload speed gradually increases over the upload process?
[22:28] <agronholm> because the tcp window is scaled up
[22:29] <gColossus> could you elaborate more on that?
[22:30] <agronholm> well tcp connections have a "window" which says how much data can be sent without waiting for confirmation of reception from the other end
[22:30] <agronholm> this is to prevent choking the connection
[22:31] <gColossus> uh huh, and why does it gradually increase?
[22:31] <agronholm> it increases when the tcp/ip algorithms detect that your pipe can handle that much throughput
[22:32] <agronholm> so it gives the connection a larger allowance
[22:32] * wmeissner (~wmeissner@123.200.243.168) Quit (Quit: wmeissner)
[22:32] <agronholm> which then drops if the ACK packets don't keep coming
[22:32] <agronholm> basically the throughput speed is auto-adjusted this way
[22:33] <gColossus> agronholm: but I don't see the same behavior with downloading
[22:33] <agronholm> really? I do
[22:33] <agronholm> it happens quite fast though
[22:33] <gColossus> agronholm: well, let me clarify this. I am testing a system and currently measuring average upload and download speed
[22:34] <gColossus> with download speed, I see average speed fluctuates around 7 - 10 Mbps
[22:34] <gColossus> however, with upload speed, file of size 16MB has average upload speed of 23.59Mbps, while 2GB file has average upload speed of 77.06 Mbps
[22:35] <gColossus> average speed shows gradual increases from 23.6 to 77.06 for files size in the range of 16MB and 2GB
[22:36] <gColossus> specifically, 21MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB.
[22:38] <agronholm> I only have basic theoretical knowledge of how TCP works
[22:38] <agronholm> I have not actually hacked any tcp stacks myself
[22:38] <agronholm> different stacks may handle the scaling differently
[22:42] <gColossus> agronholm: I see, I don't have much knowledge of basic networking :( I will finish my CCNA and OS reading after I finish this report :(
[22:53] * lheuer (~Adium@unaffiliated/lheuer) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[22:58] * lheuer (~Adium@unaffiliated/lheuer) has joined #jython
[23:00] <gColossus> agronholm: hmm, Windows scaling factor: -1
[23:07] * enebo (~enebo@c-75-73-8-169.hsd1.mn.comcast.net) Quit (Quit: enebo)
