[2:34] <armence> Hello all, I heard a rumor that jython "just works" for android development. Is that true?
[2:39] <cschneid> armence: I have no answer for you (just lurking, no real knowledge of the project), but be aware this channel is pretty slow.
[2:39] <cschneid> but there are real people here somewhere :)
[2:39] * lopex (lopex@89-76-44-27.dynamic.chello.pl) Quit ()
[3:00] * lolsuper_ (~super_@unaffiliated/lolsuper-/x-9881387) has joined #jython
[3:30] <agronholm> armence: probably bs
[3:31] <agronholm> I'd be really surprised if jython worked on android at all
[3:31] <headius> I'd be less surprised about jython than jruby, and jruby works fine
[3:31] <agronholm> jython can't produce dalvik bytecode yet afaik
[3:32] <agronholm> but then I'm not a core developer
[3:37] <pr3d4t0r> There is a Google Code project for scripted languages. Python already sort of works there. Not Jython.
[3:38] <pr3d4t0r> If this is *really* pressing I'll dig it out of my scroll from #python; I asked that recently.
[3:42] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: Hej.
[3:43] <agronholm> yes?
[3:43] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: How well do you know GothAlice?
[3:43] <armence> pr3d4t0r, Thanks
[3:43] <agronholm> we've worked together for some time now, being very much of the same mind
[3:43] <agronholm> I've never met her in RL tho
[3:43] <agronholm> why?
[3:44] <pr3d4t0r> armence: Given the performance profile for Android phones, I think it'd make more sense to run CPython than Jython there. It's not like the devices are that efficient :)
[3:44] <armence> pr3d4t0r, Fair enough... :)
[3:44] <pr3d4t0r> armence: I use CPython on my iPhone and it's OKi. It's not fast, but will do the job for a quick test or simple but non-trivial scripts.
[3:45] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: She took down the graph you showed me the other day and I was going to ask her to put it back up :)
[3:45] <agronholm> oh
[3:45] <armence> pr3d4t0r, You're killing my dream of doing android dev in python... Fine... I guess I'll stick to Java...
[3:45] <armence> :(
[3:45] <agronholm> pr3d4t0r: http://public.iwork.com/document/fi/?d=Marrow_Versus_Tornado.numbers&a=p155098957
[3:45] <agronholm> this one?
[3:46] <pr3d4t0r> . . .
[3:46] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: Yeah :)
[3:46] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: I got a "document not found" the last time I tried it. Weird :)
[3:46] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: Thanks :)
[3:46] <agronholm> pr3d4t0r: turns out that PEP 3148 really kill the performance of an asynchronous app
[3:46] <agronholm> *PEP 3148 futures
[3:47] <agronholm> it's especially apparent with a 4Kb chunk size
[3:47] <agronholm> I did an experiment then
[3:47] <agronholm> I made a FauxFuture class that worked like Future except it didn't use thread synchronization
[3:47] <agronholm> it boosted performance like over 90%
[3:48] <agronholm> that wrecked all my great plans for pushing Futures for async frameworks
[3:50] <agronholm> pr3d4t0r: as you can see from the graph, the influence of Futures is far lesser with higher chunk sizes
[3:50] <pr3d4t0r> agronholm: Yeah.
[3:50] <agronholm> it was quite disappointing
